Four Proposed Messages and Graphics for

Radon Action Month – January, 2011

Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation

Office of Environmental Assistance – Radon Program

Please contact amy.little@tn.gov or call the radon hotline 1-800-232-1139 to receive electronic copies of this information

Radon-2nd leading cause of lung cancer: Request your test kit at www.tn.gov/environment/ea/radon.

Living “green” is about more than just energy efficiency and recycling — it’s also about giving your family a healthier home.  Breathing “greener” air means checking your home for radon, a leading indoor air problem that is the second leading cause of lung cancer.  Breathing in high levels of radon indoors can lead to lung cancer yet it is easily preventable.  A simple home radon test can tell you if you have a problem. If your home does have a high radon level, there are simple ways to reduce this radioactive gas and make your home’s air safer.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Office of Environmental Assistance – Radon Program is offering a limited amount of free radon test kits to Tennessee citizens. Please request your test kit through our online system at www.tn.gov/environment/ea/radon or mail your request to:  Radon Program, 711 R.S. Gass Blvd., Nashville, TN 37216. Be sure to include your name, address, city, state, zip code, phone number or email address and type of foundation.

January is National Radon Action Month

Test Your Home. Protect Your Health.

During January’s National Radon Action Month, the U.S. Surgeon General and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes for radon. Radon is a natural radioactive gas that you can’t see, smell, or taste but could be present at a dangerous level in your home. As the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. and the first leading cause among non-smokers, radon claims more than 20,000 lives annually. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix it to protect yourself and your family.
